Putin announced a 32-hour ceasefire over the Orthodox Easter weekend, which was set to begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday and last until the end of Sunday. However, the ceasefire was marred by reports of significant violations from both sides. Ukraine’s armed forces reported 2,299 ceasefire violations by 7 a.m. on Sunday, while Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have recorded 1,971 violations on the same day.
In a show of solidarity with the Orthodox faith, Putin attended the Easter vigil at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, where the divine service was led by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. During the service, Putin remarked, “The great holiday of Easter fills the hearts of millions with genuine joy and faith in the triumph of life.”
Meanwhile, reactions from both sides reflect the ongoing strife. Irena Bulhakova, a spokesperson for Ukraine, expressed hope amidst the turmoil, stating, “Good triumphs over darkness, and we hope for that very much.” In contrast, Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, emphasized the need for sustainable peace, asserting that it can only be achieved by securing national interests.
The International Boxing Association also extended greetings for Orthodox Easter to athletes and fans, highlighting the cultural significance of the holiday despite the ongoing conflict.
