“We just have to take it on the chin, learn what the problem was, and make sure it never happens again,” said Lando Norris, reflecting on a challenging day for McLaren at the Chinese Grand Prix. Both of the team’s cars suffered terminal electrical faults, leading to a disappointing race day in Shanghai.
Norris was particularly affected, as he failed to start the race due to an electronics issue. This marked the first time in his eight-season Formula 1 career that he missed a race. His teammate, Oscar Piastri, was also withdrawn from the grid due to an electrical issue on the power unit, marking his second consecutive race missed after crashing at the Australian Grand Prix.
Prior to the race, Piastri was set to start in fifth position, while Norris was lined up in sixth. However, both drivers encountered different electrical issues, although they were related to the power unit. Norris expressed his frustration, stating, “I’m disappointed I didn’t get to go and do my job today. I’m frustrated for the whole team, it’s not just me.”
Four cars in total failed to start the race, including McLaren’s, due to various issues. This situation is particularly notable as it was the first time since the 2005 United States Grand Prix that both McLaren cars failed to start a race.
“It was all fine on the way to the grid…an electrical issue on the power unit, which I think was the same for Lando, but it’s not the same electrical issue,” Piastri explained, highlighting the complexity of the problems faced by the team.
In response to the incidents, McLaren has launched a joint investigation with Mercedes to determine the root causes of the electrical issues. The team is keen to resolve these problems to prevent future occurrences and to ensure that both drivers can compete effectively in upcoming races.
As the team looks forward, the focus will be on understanding the failures and implementing solutions. Norris concluded, “Sometimes it’s better just to leave them to crack on with things, but I found out probably 20 minutes before I was meant to go out the garage.” This highlights the urgency and stress that the team faced on race day, as they grappled with unexpected technical difficulties.
