Greensboro Welcomes Team Norway
“UNCG is proud to support an international team of this caliber as it prepares to compete on the world stage,” stated UNCG Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr. This announcement marks Greensboro as the Team Base Camp city for the Norwegian National Football Team ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) designated as the team’s training facility.
The Greensboro Sports Foundation led the local organizing committee in partnership with the City of Greensboro, UNCG, and the Greensboro Convention & Visitors Bureau to secure this prestigious opportunity. Greensboro’s selection reflects the strength of its partnerships and UNCG’s outstanding facilities, which have previously hosted Brazil’s SE Palmeiras during the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
Greensboro Mayor Marikay Abuzuaiter emphasized the significance of this event, saying, “This selection reflects the strength of our partnerships, UNCG’s outstanding facilities, and our city’s commitment to international athletics.” Hosting Team Norway is expected to contribute an estimated $4.2 million to Greensboro’s local economy, showcasing the financial benefits of such international events.
Richard Beard, President of the Greensboro Sports Foundation, added, “It elevates Greensboro’s reputation as a global ‘tournament town’ and showcases our community’s world-class facilities and hospitality on the international stage.” This sentiment underscores the city’s long-standing legacy as a destination for professional sports in the Southeast.
As Greensboro prepares to welcome Team Norway, the University of North Carolina is also gearing up for its own athletic endeavors. The Tar Heels have received a double bye into the quarterfinal round as the No. 4 seed in the 2026 ACC Tournament, which starts on March 10, 2026, at Spectrum Center in Charlotte. UNC is seeking its first tournament title since 2016, having a strong record of 50-14 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.
With a 24-7 record entering the postseason, UNC has won 18 ACC Tournament championships and boasts an impressive overall record of 110-53 in the event. The Tar Heels are projected to be a No. 5 or No. 6 seed in March Madness, adding to the excitement surrounding the upcoming tournament.
As both Team Norway and the UNC Tar Heels prepare for their respective competitions, Greensboro stands poised to showcase its capabilities as a host city for international sports. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional events or partnerships that may arise from this unique convergence of athletic talent in the region.
