The State Department is preparing to release a limited number of U.S. passports featuring Donald Trump’s image on the inside cover, marking a significant milestone as this will be the first time a sitting president appears on such documents.
As part of the celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary, which will take place in July, the new passport designs will not only showcase Trump’s likeness but also include the text of the Declaration of Independence along with his signature rendered in gold. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to commemorate this historic occasion through various means, including commemorative coins and other memorabilia.
The State Department plans to produce a limited run of 25,000 of these unique passports, which will be available to any American citizen who applies for a passport during the rollout. This decision has sparked varied reactions among observers, with some praising it as a fitting tribute while others criticize it as unnecessary.
Tommy Pigott from the State Department stated, “As the United States celebrates America’s 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is preparing to release a limited number of specially designed U.S. passports to commemorate this historic occasion.” This sentiment reflects an effort to blend national pride with a personal touch through the inclusion of Trump’s image.
Notably, no modern U.S. passport has featured the image of a sitting president before, making this initiative particularly noteworthy. Edward Kolla, an observer of political memorabilia, remarked that the decision to include Trump’s image is “wacky,” indicating that public opinion may be divided on this development.
The back cover of these passports will feature an American flag with ‘250’ centered between thirteen stars—an emblematic representation of American independence and unity. While many look forward to this unique addition to their travel documents, officials have yet to finalize all details regarding the design approval process.
In light of these developments, it remains unclear how widely these passports will be embraced by the public and whether they will become sought-after collector’s items or simply viewed as novelty items associated with the Trump administration.
