According to Ali, this traumatic birth led to significant complications for Edward, who required extended care in the NICU after his delivery. She asserts that the distressing nature of his entry into the world directly contributed to his health issues, which included difficulty urinating independently for several days following his birth. Ali expressed her dismay at the treatment she received, stating, “It’s an incredibly dangerous thing that they did; they could have snapped his neck.”
In reflecting on her experience, Tatyana Ali has openly referred to it as an instance of obstetric violence, a term that encapsulates the coercive practices some women face during childbirth. She articulated her frustration by saying, “I had a really healthy pregnancy … and all of that changed once we got into the hospital.” This sentiment resonates with many black women who report similar experiences of mistreatment and disregard in medical settings.
