Road closures for the Pittsburgh Marathon will begin as early as Friday, affecting traffic throughout the weekend. Thousands of runners are expected to participate in the marathon on Sunday, which will lead to significant disruptions across the city.
The marathon course will take participants on a tour through 14 neighborhoods, starting from the West End Bridge and culminating in Homewood. As part of this event, road closures will commence at noon on Friday along the Boulevard of the Allies between Wood Street and Stanwix Street.
Key timelines for road closures:
- Friday: Road closures start at noon in Downtown Pittsburgh.
- Saturday: Closures for several races, including the 5K and Pittsburgh Kids Marathon, will begin at 6:45 a.m.
- Sunday: Marathon-related closures will start at 1:45 a.m. and are expected to last until approximately 2:30 p.m.
The Boulevard of the Allies is anticipated to reopen later in the evening on Sunday. P3R, the organization behind the marathon, has announced that no parking signs will be posted along streets that are closed to ensure compliance during this busy period.
Troy Schooley from P3R emphasized that “once the final runner crosses the third mile, we will reopen sections at a time, which is great. It’s kind of a rolling opening.” He also urged residents to remove their vehicles from streets with no parking signs to avoid towing, stating, “the last thing we want to do is tow cars. We want everybody to have a good time.”
As this weekend unfolds, it remains unclear how these closures might affect local businesses or public transport schedules. However, residents and visitors should prepare for delays and plan alternate routes accordingly.
