Ondrej Satoria shines in final international appearance
Ondrej Satoria, a 29-year-old pitcher from the Czech Republic, made a notable exit from international baseball by throwing 4.2 scoreless innings against Samurai Japan on March 10, 2026, during the World Baseball Classic (WBC). Satoria’s performance included three strikeouts, further solidifying his reputation after previously striking out renowned player Shohei Ohtani in the 2023 WBC.
Throughout the 2026 tournament, Satoria demonstrated his skill by also pitching 3.2 scoreless innings against Australia, where he recorded six strikeouts. His fastest pitch was clocked at 79 miles per hour, showcasing his ability on the mound despite the Czech Republic finishing Pool C play with a record of 0-4.
After his final game, Satoria received a standing ovation from the crowd at the Tokyo Dome, a fitting tribute to his contributions to the sport. “I think it’s right, because I got famous here three years ago, and it totally makes sense to me to end it here on probably — for us — the biggest international stage where we can play,” Satoria remarked, reflecting on his decision to retire from international play.
In addition to his baseball career, Satoria works as an electrical controller at ČEZ Group, balancing his professional life with his passion for the sport. He plans to continue pitching for his local club in Ostrava, where he has garnered respect and admiration from fans. “I’m just a regular dude from Ostrava, but here they respect me and have me sign balls,” he shared.
Pavel Chadim, a close observer of Satoria’s journey, expressed his joy for the pitcher’s achievements, stating, “Finish in a full house, 45,000 people. I think he has a lot of Japanese fans. I think on the field, he feels Japanese. I am so so so happy for him.”
Satoria’s journey in international baseball has been marked by significant milestones, including his rise to fame during the 2023 WBC. His final appearance on the international stage has left a lasting impression on fans and teammates alike.
As Satoria transitions away from international competition, he leaves behind a legacy of determination and skill, having achieved everything he set out to do in his baseball career. “I’m proud that I can say I achieved everything that I wanted,” he concluded, marking the end of an era for the Czech baseball community.
