Nick Schmaltz Signs Eight-Year Contract Extension
Nick Schmaltz has signed an eight-year contract extension with the Utah Mammoth, worth a total of $64 million, which translates to an average annual value of $8 million. This agreement secures Schmaltz’s position with the Mammoth through the 2034 season, highlighting the team’s commitment to retaining their star player.
At 30 years old, Schmaltz is enjoying a standout season, having recorded 24 goals and 35 assists for 59 points in just 65 games. His performance has not only established a new single-season career high for goals but also contributed to his impressive +21 rating this season. These statistics underscore his vital role in the Mammoth’s offensive strategy.
Schmaltz’s journey in the NHL began when he was selected 20th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2014 NHL Draft. Since then, he has played 653 career NHL games, accumulating a total of 482 points, which includes 166 goals and 316 assists. His experience and skill have made him a key player for the Mammoth, especially during their inaugural season in 2024-25, where he played all 82 games.
Reflecting on his new contract, Schmaltz expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “There was never a doubt that Utah is where I want to play the rest of my career and I’m thrilled to sign an eight-year extension.” His commitment to the team is evident, and he is eager to contribute to their future successes.
Bill Armstrong, the team’s general manager, praised Schmaltz, saying, “Nick is a tremendous player and person who is very deserving of this contract.” This sentiment is echoed by Ryan Smith, who noted, “There’s a lot of momentum building around our team, and extending Nick Schmaltz is an important part of continuing that.” Such endorsements from management highlight the integral role Schmaltz plays within the organization.
Schmaltz’s collegiate career at the University of North Dakota also adds to his impressive resume. He played two seasons there, helping the team secure its eighth national championship in 2015-16. His success at the collegiate level laid the groundwork for his professional career and has contributed to his current achievements with the Mammoth.
As the Mammoth look to build on their momentum, Schmaltz’s extension is seen as a crucial step in their quest for future success, including aspirations for a Stanley Cup. “We have a very bright future, and I am thankful to Ryan and Ashley Smith for wanting me to be a part of the group that will one day bring a Stanley Cup to Utah,” Schmaltz remarked, emphasizing his dedication to the team’s goals.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional moves the Mammoth may make in the upcoming seasons, but with Schmaltz secured, the team is poised to continue its development and competitiveness in the league.
