“What I love about this is that it’s so specific to the Philadelphia community,” remarked Michael Empric, reflecting on the local significance of National Cheesesteak Day, celebrated annually on March 24. This year, the festivities included a remarkable Guinness World Record set at Philadelphia International Airport for the “Longest Line of Cheesesteaks,” measuring an impressive 1,200 feet.
The record-breaking line utilized almost a thousand pounds of ribeye steak and 225 pounds of cheese, showcasing the city’s dedication to its beloved sandwich. Dana Krawchuk, a spokesperson for the airport, emphasized, “The airport is really the entry point for everybody coming into the city,” highlighting how the event connects visitors to Philadelphia’s culinary culture.
In addition to the record-setting event, local cheesesteak institutions offered enticing promotions. Pat’s King of Steaks provided free fries with any cheesesteak purchase between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., while Geno’s Steaks ran a promotion where customers buying four cheesesteaks received the fifth one for free.
Other participating establishments included Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, which offered a buy-one-get-one 50% off deal, and Hot Table, where small cheesesteak paninis were available for just $5. Philly’s Best took $2 off their Cooper Classic cheesesteak from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Texadelphia served buy-one-get-one-free cheesesteaks.
G’s Cheesesteaks joined the celebration by handing out free sandwiches from 1 to 3 p.m., further engaging the community in the festivities. Empric noted the significance of these promotions, stating, “To do this in the airport and to donate so many of the cheesesteaks to TSA is really incredible.” This initiative not only celebrates the cheesesteak but also gives back to the community.
National Cheesesteak Day has its roots in 1994 when four Philadelphia high school friends first celebrated their love for cheesesteaks. Since then, it has evolved into a day of community engagement and culinary delight, bringing together locals and visitors alike.
As the day unfolds, cheesesteak enthusiasts are encouraged to indulge in the various promotions and enjoy the spirit of Philadelphia’s iconic sandwich. With the ongoing support of local businesses and the community, National Cheesesteak Day continues to thrive, reinforcing the city’s identity through its culinary heritage.
