Microsoft has confirmed that it will fully retire the Outlook Lite app for Android on May 25, 2026, marking the end of a service that catered to users with low-end devices. Launched in 2022, Outlook Lite was designed specifically for users in emerging markets, supporting devices with just 1GB of RAM and optimized for 2G and 3G networks.
Since its debut, Outlook Lite has achieved significant traction, surpassing 10 million downloads on the Google Play Store by September 2024. However, the app’s limitations, including a lack of integration with cloud services and enterprise features such as Data Loss Prevention (DLP), have led to its phased-out status.
As part of its strategy, Microsoft pulled Outlook Lite from the Google Play Store on October 6, 2025, signaling a shift in focus towards the full Outlook app for Android. “The retirement of Outlook Lite is part of a broader effort to reduce overlap and focus development and support on Microsoft Outlook Mobile, our primary mobile email experience,” a Microsoft spokesperson stated.
Following the retirement date, users will no longer be able to fetch new emails, and core features of the app will be disabled. Microsoft recommends that users still relying on Outlook Lite consider switching to the full Outlook app for Android. An upgrade option will be presented to those users, facilitating the transition.
Outlook Lite was ad-supported, similar to its Windows counterpart, which allowed it to remain accessible to users with limited resources. However, as mobile technology continues to evolve, Microsoft’s decision reflects a need to streamline its offerings and enhance user experience through its more robust Outlook Mobile application.
“If you like the Outlook Lite experience, consider switching to the full Outlook app for Android,” the company advised, emphasizing the importance of adapting to the changing digital landscape.
