Recognition of Total Worker Health® Affiliate
On March 10, 2026, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) was designated as a Total Worker Health® Affiliate by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This recognition marks Michigan as the first state in the nation to achieve this status, highlighting the state’s commitment to integrating mental health into workplace safety and health strategies.
The designation is a significant milestone for LEO’s Healthy Work Healthy Mind initiative, which aims to support both physical and mental health for employees. Susan Corbin, a representative from LEO, emphasized the importance of this integration, stating, “Supporting both physical and mental health for employees is essential to strong families, resilient businesses and a competitive economy.”
LEO’s Initiatives and Programs
As part of its efforts, LEO has launched the Learn, Educate, Act, Deploy, Study (LEADS) workplace mental health consultation pilot. This program is designed to enhance workplace mental health resources and support for employees across Michigan.
Currently, there are 60 Affiliate organizations in the NIOSH program as of January 2026, reflecting a growing recognition of the importance of mental health in the workplace. Sean Egan, another spokesperson for LEO, remarked, “Work has a direct impact on people’s health and well-being,” underscoring the necessity of these initiatives.
Background on Recent Events
In a separate but notable case, Dale Warner was convicted of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the death of his ex-wife, Dee Warner. Dee was last seen on April 25, 2021, and her remains were discovered in August 2024 in a sealed tank on property belonging to Dale. This tragic event has drawn significant attention in the community.
Dale Warner had tracked Dee’s location over 2,100 times during their 15-year marriage, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance. He rejected a plea deal for second-degree murder, and his sentencing date is set for May 7.
The recognition of LEO as a Total Worker Health® Affiliate is viewed as a massive win for the people of northern Michigan. Ken Borton, a local representative, stated, “This is a massive win for the people of northern Michigan,” highlighting the positive implications for community health and safety.
The recent ice storms in northern Michigan in 2025 caused unprecedented damage to these communities, making the focus on worker health even more critical. As Michigan continues to navigate these challenges, the integration of mental health into workplace safety remains a priority for LEO.
As developments unfold, the community looks forward to the benefits that these initiatives will bring to the workforce and the overall health of Michigan residents.
