Mamata Banerjee is seeking a fourth consecutive term as Chief Minister of West Bengal, and her campaign has transformed into a battle of Bengali identity against perceived outsider threats from the BJP, particularly in light of significant voter disenfranchisement due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The political landscape prior to this shift saw Banerjee enjoying considerable support; however, the recent SIR process, which has resulted in a reduction of about 12% in the electorate, has altered the dynamics. Documents show that over 27 lakh voters were left to appeal to tribunals due to issues arising from this process, which has become a contentious focal point in the current election campaign.
As the campaigning for the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections unfolded, it became evident that both Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were adapting their strategies. The BJP focused its campaign on the theme of ‘insiders versus outsiders’, while Banerjee accused the Election Commission of acting as a ‘BJP agent’, suggesting that her party was under siege. This shift reflects her response to the BJP’s significant gains in previous elections—specifically, their acquisition of 77 seats in the 2021 assembly elections.
In an effort to galvanize support amidst allegations of anti-incumbency—Banerjee has faced challenges for nearly 15 years—she conducted a nine-kilometer march in South Kolkata as part of her final appeal to voters. This high-energy campaign featured significant public engagement, underscoring her commitment to rallying her base. Yet, despite these efforts, analysts highlight that there are approximately 90 lakh fewer names in the electorate compared to the previous election cycle.

As Banerjee continues her campaign with fervor, she emphasizes that voting is essential to protect one’s rights, stating, “This time it is necessary to vote to protect your own rights.” In contrast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence by referencing his connection with divine energy during his campaigning efforts. He remarked, “I felt Lord Ram’s presence fill me with boundless energy… In this election too, I experienced that same feeling.” Such contrasting narratives underscore not only differing strategies but also divergent visions for West Bengal’s future.
