Among these initiatives is the introduction of two new visa categories: a ‘Remote Working Visa’ and a ‘Content Creator Visa.’ According to Thoriq Ibrahim, the initiative is designed to reposition the Maldives as a longer-stay destination, catering to visitors seeking extended experiences in the archipelago.
In a related development, the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa has launched wellness programs tailored for children aged 3 and up. Dr. Anand Prayaga emphasized the importance of instilling healthy habits early, stating, “If we want to truly create a healthy future generation, physically, emotionally and intellectually, we must begin earlier.” This initiative reflects a growing trend towards family-oriented wellness tourism.
Another resort, Joali Being, has also begun welcoming children as of December 2023, further diversifying the Maldives’ appeal to families. Josephine Njenga, a wellness expert, remarked, “We are planting seeds, introducing healthy rituals early and reinforcing the idea that rest, restoration and mindful movement are natural rhythms of life, not indulgences.”
However, the tourism sector’s challenges are underscored by a tragic incident involving a speedboat accident that resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including prominent businessman Gautam Singhania. The accident involved seven people, with five being thrown into the water. Shujau Ali, a witness, commented, “It is not something someone in a good condition of mind would ever do,” raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the event. Details remain unconfirmed.
In a bid to enhance its tourism offerings, the Maldives government has also announced the lifting of a 40-year ban on spear fishing, a move that could attract more adventure-seeking visitors.
