Idaho Basketball Reaches Big Sky Championship
Idaho men’s basketball has made a significant achievement by reaching the Big Sky Tournament championship game for the first time since 1993, following a decisive 81-68 victory over the Eastern Washington Eagles. This win marks a pivotal moment for the Vandals, who have shown remarkable improvement under head coach Alex Pribble.
With a current season record of 20-14 and a 9-9 standing in the Big Sky Conference, Idaho has increased its win total in each of Pribble’s three seasons at the helm. Kolton Mitchell led the charge in the semifinal game, scoring 26 points and expressing gratitude towards the fans, stating, “We have the best fans… It’s really special to be able to do it for them and hopefully we’re able to get it done tomorrow.”
This season has been particularly notable for the Vandals, as they have won at least four consecutive games for the first time since the 2017-18 season. Additionally, Idaho’s men’s and women’s basketball teams both advancing to the Big Sky Championship in the same year is a feat not seen since the 1989-90 season.
Historically, the Big Sky Tournament has not been favorable for Idaho, with only two conference tournament wins since rejoining the Big Sky in the 2014-15 season. The last NCAA Tournament appearance for the Vandals was in 1990, making this championship opportunity even more significant.
Idaho’s success in the tournament this year includes three victories, a notable achievement considering they had not won multiple games in a conference tournament since the 2013-14 season. Coach Pribble remarked, “What a great day to be a Vandal,” highlighting the pride and excitement surrounding the team.
As they prepare for the championship game against the Montana Grizzlies on March 11, 2026, at 9:30 PM MT, the Vandals are looking to capitalize on their momentum. Coach Travis DeCuire of Montana acknowledged the importance of balance in gameplay, stating, “I’m very selective with the shots we take. I believe in balance. But this is the time of year you turn guys loose.”
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the final preparations for the championship game, but the anticipation is palpable among fans and players alike. The Vandals’ journey this season has rekindled hope and excitement for the future of Idaho basketball.
