Legitimacy concerns were already part of the Hungarian opposition Tisza Party’s narrative as the country approaches its parliamentary elections scheduled for April 12, 2026. An international election observation mission has been launched to monitor these elections, co-chaired by Polish lawyer Jerzy Kwaśniewski and US communications specialist Anna Wellisz. This mission, part of the Liberty Coalition for a Free and Fair Election (LCFFE), comprises nearly 100 observers from 10 countries across four continents.
The primary aim of this observation mission is to assess whether Hungary’s electoral process is conducted in a lawful, transparent, and democratic manner. Kwaśniewski emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Launching an observation mission for the parliamentary elections in Hungary 🇭🇺 as part of the Liberty Coalition for a Free and Fair Election.”
In recent months, the political landscape in Hungary has shifted significantly, particularly among younger voters. A recent survey indicates that 65% of voters under 30 support the Tisza Party, while only 14% back the ruling party led by Viktor Orbán, who has been in power for 16 years. This dramatic shift in support is partly attributed to a recent scandal involving a presidential pardon, which has alienated many young voters from Orbán’s Fidesz party.
The Tisza Party, which emerged recently, has already made a notable impact, securing 30% of the vote in the European Parliament elections just three months after its formation. This rise in popularity among the youth demographic suggests a potential challenge to Orbán’s long-standing dominance.
Florián Végh, a representative of the Tisza Party, expressed the sentiments of many young voters, saying, “We’ve lived our whole lives in this system, and we want to see what it could be like outside of it.” This desire for change is echoed by political analysts who note that Fidesz has “lost the title of young, democratic and alliance,” according to Levente Koltai.
Orbán, however, remains cautious, asserting, “These are not times for taking risks, experimenting or trying new things.” His administration’s strategy appears to focus on maintaining stability in the face of rising opposition.
As the election date approaches, observers and officials are closely monitoring the situation, anticipating that the outcome could significantly reshape Hungary’s political landscape.
