Global Entry Program to Resume
“As DHS continually evaluates measures it can take amidst the Democrats’ continued shutdown of the department, DHS will be reactivating Global Entry on March 11th at 5:00 AM ET,” stated a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This announcement comes after the Global Entry program was suspended on February 22, 2026, due to a partial government shutdown that affected various services across the country.
The Global Entry program, designed to facilitate faster entry for preapproved American citizens and lawful permanent residents, allows members to bypass standard passport-control lines. This program is particularly beneficial for frequent international travelers, as it not only saves time but also enhances security measures at U.S. borders.
Applicants for Global Entry must pay a $120 application fee and undergo thorough background checks and interviews. Once approved, membership is valid for up to five years, providing access to expedited processing at airports. Currently, there are approximately 13 million members enrolled in the program, highlighting its popularity among travelers.
The suspension of Global Entry drew significant criticism from lawmakers and industry groups, who argued that it undermined both convenience and security. The US Travel Association remarked, “Global Entry is far more than a convenience, it is on the front line of national security.” This sentiment reflects the broader concerns regarding the impact of the suspension on travel efficiency and safety.
During the three weeks of the ongoing government shutdown, the suspension was part of emergency measures taken by DHS to conserve funding and personnel. The decision to halt the program was met with backlash from various sectors, with many calling for a swift resolution to restore services. “The unusual decision to suspend Global Entry had been strongly criticized across the travel sector and by some lawmakers on Capitol Hill,” noted industry observers.
As the resumption date approaches, travelers are hopeful that normal operations will return without further interruptions. However, DHS has not provided a clear timeline for when full services will be restored after funding is reinstated, leaving some uncertainties regarding future operations.
The reinstatement of Global Entry is expected to alleviate some of the pressures faced by travelers during the shutdown, allowing them to access TSA PreCheck lanes at airport security, further enhancing their travel experience. With the program back in operation, many are looking forward to a smoother journey through U.S. borders once again.
