A fire broke out at the Fuyao Glass America plant in Moraine, Ohio, around 8:30 p.m. on March 22, 2026. The incident has raised concerns about safety and operational continuity at a facility that plays a crucial role in the U.S. automotive glass supply chain, producing 30% of all automotive glass in the country.
Firefighters faced significant challenges as they battled the blaze, which originated on the roof of the building. Operations were temporarily suspended due to strong storms and lightning in the area, with heavy winds reaching up to 40 mph exacerbating the situation and stoking the flames.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, thanks in part to the swift action of employees who implemented an emergency response plan, ensuring that all personnel were evacuated safely. “At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, a fire was reported at our Moraine, Ohio facility. Employees quickly implemented our emergency response plan, all were evacuated safely and first responders were notified,” stated Fuyao Glass America.
Fire crews utilized thousands of gallons of water to combat the fire, and electric service was cut to the plant to assist in their efforts. Residents in the vicinity reported a strong chemical smell and visible smoke, with local resident Tim Turpin noting, “There’s a haze in the air, and a really strong chemical smell,” while his neighbor Sue Turpin added, “And we can smell it in our house.”
The fire struck a newer part of the Fuyao complex where new manufacturing lines were being established, following a significant expansion that added 600,000 square feet of production space in 2025. This facility, which opened in 2016, was Fuyao’s first North American plant and employs over 2,000 people.
Doug Hatcher, a local resident, praised the efforts of the fire crews, stating, “Fire crews did a good job under tough conditions.” However, the cause of the fire is still under investigation, leaving many questions unanswered. Details remain unconfirmed.
