Cam Thomas Waived by Milwaukee Bucks After Brief Stint

The Milwaukee Bucks have waived guard Cam Thomas on March 23, 2026, marking a swift end to his tenure with the team. Thomas, who averaged more than 20 points per game last season, struggled to find his footing in Milwaukee, putting up just 9.6 points on 41% shooting over 18 games.

After being signed on February 8, 2026, following his release from the Brooklyn Nets, Thomas had a standout performance, scoring 34 points in his second game with the Bucks on February 13. However, his overall contributions were not enough to secure a longer stay.

Bucks coach Doc Rivers acknowledged the difficult decision, stating, “We ran out of bodies, and at the end of the day, there were guys you had to make a decision on.” Rivers also expressed his appreciation for Thomas, saying, “I thought Cam was really good overall, and he may be somebody we revisit.”

At the time of Thomas’ release, the Bucks were struggling with a record of 29-41 and sitting 11th in the Eastern Conference. This challenging situation likely influenced the decision to waive him as the team looks to make adjustments.

Historically, Thomas was selected with the No. 27 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Nets. He was a restricted free agent last summer and signed a one-year qualifying offer with Brooklyn before being waived at the trade deadline.

Following Thomas’ release, the Bucks converted Pete Nance‘s two-way contract into a standard NBA contract, indicating a shift in their roster strategy. Thomas is now ineligible to participate in the postseason if another NBA team picks him up due to being waived after March 1.

Rivers described the decision as “just a tough one, honestly,” reflecting the complexities involved in roster management during a challenging season.

As the Bucks navigate the remainder of the season, observers will be watching closely to see how this decision impacts their performance and whether Thomas finds a new opportunity in the league.
