Brett Larson Takes the Helm as Men’s Hockey Coach at the University of Minnesota

Brett Larson has officially been named the new men’s hockey coach at the University of Minnesota, signing a five-year contract to lead the Gophers. This decision comes after Bob Motzko mutually parted ways with the program following an eight-year tenure.

Larson, 53, arrives at Minnesota after a successful stint at St. Cloud State University, where he compiled a record of 153-116-23 over eight seasons. His coaching prowess was evident as he guided the Huskies to the NCAA championship game in 2021 and secured a National Collegiate Hockey Conference title in 2023.

During his time at St. Cloud State, Larson’s teams made four NCAA tournament appearances and won two conference championships. His coaching accolades also include being named the NCHC Coach of the Year in 2018-19 after leading his team to a regular-season title.

Before his head coaching role, Larson served as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he was part of two NCAA championship-winning teams in 2011 and 2018. Additionally, he contributed to USA Hockey’s success, winning two World Juniors gold medals in 2024 and 2025.

Larson was a finalist for the Wisconsin coaching position that ultimately went to Mike Hastings, highlighting his growing reputation in the collegiate hockey landscape. He was selected for the Gophers’ head coach position over other notable candidates, including Grant Potulny and Steve Rohlik.

Mark Coyle, the athletic director at the University of Minnesota, emphasized the importance of making a long-term decision for Gopher hockey, stating, “We kept talking about what was the best long-term decision for Gopher hockey.” This sentiment reflects the program’s commitment to building a competitive future.

Larson’s hiring is pending the completion of a background check and Regents approval, with details remaining unconfirmed. He is expected to be introduced at a news conference at 4 p.m. on the day of the announcement, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Gopher hockey.
